Young takes The Drum to Miami with new US base

Marketing, advertising and media publisher The Drum is opening a new base in Miami.

Co-founder Gordon Young said the US has been a “huge” growth market for his firm.

Young wrote in a social media post: “Can’t quite believe I’m writing this, but this is my last week in London — at least for a while.

“On Thursday, I swap grey skies for palm trees as I head to Miami to join James Wilson to set up a new base for The Drum.

“The US has been a huge growth market for us, and I reckon it’s time for one of the founders (yours truly) to be on the ground full-time to build on that momentum. Excited? Absolutely. Slightly terrified? That too.

“To me, Miami is a creative and cultural powerhouse that doesn’t always get the recognition it deserves, and I’m looking forward to changing that.

“I’ll also be diving headfirst into the US market as Editor-in-Chief, which sounds grand but really just means I’ll be causing trouble in a new timezone.

“Of course, I’ll miss London. Had a small leaving do on Friday with friends I’ve made along the way  — neighbours, folks I met through the kids, colleagues, see the pic above.

“A few tears were shed, particularly when I attempted to mark the occasion with a song. (They may have been tears of pain, hard to say.)

“But The Drum’s UK business goes from strength to strength, and Diane Young — CEO, co-founder, and, as luck would have it, my wife — will be splitting her time between both cities. So you haven’t seen the last of me here just yet.”
