The Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) has welcomed the announcement by the UK Government that the UK-India Free Trade Agreement will enter into force in July 2026.
The SWA said India is a crucial growth market worth £286 million in 2025.
Scotch Whisky Association CEO Mark Kent said: “Today’s announcement that the UK-India Free Trade Agreement will soon enter into force is welcome news, given the strategic importance of this landmark deal for the long-term growth of the Scotch Whisky industry in the largest whisky market in the world.
“It will lead to increased investment and jobs in both countries, and we commend the efforts of both governments to bring the FTA into force to realise these benefits.
“Coupled with the anticipated removal of tariffs in the US, this provides encouragement at a time of headwinds for the industry, as a result of international volatility and challenges domestically.
“We look forward to continuing to work closely with the UK Government on issues such as reform of the excise system to ensure that the industry can fully contribute to the UK’s growth agenda.”
